ICM has published the World Martial Arts: Towards a global overview, an initial outcome of ICM’s attempt to draw an overview of martial arts around the world. The report provides information about 300 martial arts of the world and a comprehensive understanding of their current status. It also discusses contemporary issues situated at the intersection between martial arts and varied sociocultural aspects, including ‘martial arts and music’, ‘martial arts and change’, ‘women in martial arts’, and ‘martial arts and nationalism’

This publication is part of ICM’s World Martial Arts Research Project which has been on-going since its establishment in 2017, as ICM has been madated by UNESCO to fulfill its role to ‘collect, preserve and disseminate records and materials on martial arts from all countries in order to support educational and academic activities in the field’. Research, last year, focused more on a macro perspective of diverse martial arts, and its modern understanding.

Martial arts that have been recognized by international sports organizations like the Olympics, and martial arts championships, those inscribed by UNESCO, members of WoMAU(World Martial Arts Union), and research/studies on martial arts have been considered in the making.

Main contents are the origination of the martial arts, its history, general information, transmission, degree of sportification, etc. The gathered data have been sorted based on continents prior publication and have been reviewed by researchers and experts in the field of martial arts, sports, anthropology, history, and so on.
