The award ceremony for the 2021 Martial Arts Education Prize has been hosted as part of the 4th African Martial Arts Conference held on the 1st and 2nd of December.

The Kung Fu Nuns, selected as winner for the 2021 prize, was awarded a certificate, medal and prize money worth of 10,000 USD during the online ceremony.

These women have been against the old decree of forbidding nuns from practicing martial arts. Since 2008, they have been preventing crimes on women, participating in rescue activities after an earthquake hit Nepal, and even COVID-19 prevention activities since 2008.

Jigme Konchok Lhamo from Kung Fu Nuns, said “I am very happy we were selected as the final winner among many great candidates. As a nun who have broken a glass ceiling, 12 years of journey with the Kung Fu Nuns have not been easy because of numerous challenges and criticism, but I believe we can lead changes though consistent social activities.”

ICM’s president Lee Si jong, governor of the Chungbuk province conveyed his congratulations saying “The Kung Fun Nuns have deeply inspired people around the globe. Their contribution in realizing UNESCO’s vision, world peace and a happy humanity through martial arts, should be highly appreciated.”
