Mutual Respect and Nonviolence Date November 16, 2021 Location UNESCO ICM International Conference Room The ICM International Martial Arts Academic Seminar is a discussion forum on the role of martial arts in addressing major global challenges including achieving sustainable development and establishing global peace. This year?s seminar was conducted in a hybrid format (utilizing both online and face-to-face aspects) with a theme of ?Exploring the Social Value of Martial Arts ? Mutual Respect and Nonviolence.? Throughout the event, interesting topics including stereotypes about martial arts were discussed by experts representing a wide range of disciplines. Ultimately, the seminar provided an opportunity to improve the public perception of martial arts. The UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Demonstration Team was established in 2019 to contribute to spreading the values of martial arts and promoting martial arts to the public. Despite the adverse circumstances of the pandemic, the team engaged in various activities including regular performances, performance tours and special performances. Additionally, it created unique online content, provided online martial arts trial sessions and produced martial arts education videos. This enabled the team to help the public to overcome temporal and spatial limitations and to encourage physical activity that has otherwise decreased due to COVID-19. Capacity Building through Martial Arts Martial arts training itself can be an ultimate objective and at the same time, a method to introduce multiple positive changes. With a strong belief in the power of martial arts, ICM has been supporting child, youth and women empowerment through martial arts. In particular in 2021, by holding the 2021 ICM International Martial Arts Photo Contest: Martial Arts, Embracing Daily Life, the center spread the positive and dynamic spirit of martial arts across the international community that has been grappling with the difficulties of the pandemic.
