Our society is confronting a growing number of challenges, such as climate change, war, and the abuse of technology, to name a few. In this context, the values promoted by sports and martial arts—respect, cooperation, and trust—are more crucial than ever. Young people, who are especially vulnerable to rapid changes and external pressure, can build inner strength through martial arts not only to accelerate personal development, but also communicate more effectively and tackle social issues. To empower youth to care for themselves and actively engage in community problemsolving, the International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement under the auspices of UNESCO (ICM) offers a wide range of martial arts programmes. For instance, the Martial Arts Open School last year served over 780 underprivileged youth from five countries, promoting both their physical and mental well-being. In addition, the Global Youth Martial Arts Academy and the Model UNESCO Conference provided platforms for university and graduate students to share their ideas and work together toward social progress. And the Youth Capacity Building Camp for out-ofschool youth in Chungju City, Chungcheongbuk-do, The values embodied in martial arts have the power to address a wide range of social issues Foreword 02 ICM 2024 Annual Report
combined martial arts training with psychological and stress management support to promote emotional health. The ICM’s second African Women Martial Arts Leaders Workshop was a crucial forum for discussing the challenges faced by women and youth in Africa, as well as exploring solutions based on the values of martial arts. The annual UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Education Prize was awarded to a judo instructor from South Africa who has long promoted training for refugees and marginalized youth, encouraging social participation and nurturing new leaders in the field. In addition to empowering youth, the Martial Arts Coaches Academy offered Korean martial arts instructors specialized lectures and tailored teaching methods for individuals with disabilities and women, enhancing the instructors’ competencies. Moreover, the ICM set a robust foundation for collecting and sharing global martial arts knowledge by conducting in-depth research and developing a comprehensive martial arts database (DB). A joint seminar with UNESCO’s Bangkok office presented compelling study findings and insights into the scientifically proven benefits of sports and martial arts on the mental health of youth. And the inaugural Global Martial Arts Forum attracted international experts in martial arts and cultural heritage, sparking provocative talks on the cultural significance and modern role of the martial arts. The ICM sincerely extends its gratitude to everyone who supported our initiatives and vision in 2024. As always, we remain committed to advancing sustainable development through the positive values of martial arts. KIM Gyujig UNESCO ICM Secretary General 03 ICM Foreword

The Martial Arts Coaches Academy sought to develop specialized teaching methods for women and persons with disabilities by fostering an inclusive training environment. 11 participants ranging from teenagers to people in their 60s took part in a comprehensive programme covering foundational theory, advanced workshops on inclusivity and diversity, tailored instruction for women and girls, adaptive training for people with multiple disabilities, and design of inclusive curricula. In addition to classroom learning, participants set training goals, developed lesson plans, and took part in practical sessions. Top performers, selected based on their assignment results and peer reviews, were given the opportunity to explore good practices by visiting an institution abroad. The exploration team visited Inclusive Cambodia, a nonprofit in Phnom Penh that offers Brazilian jujitsu classes for underprivileged girls and disabled children, and met officials from Cambodia’s education, sports, youth, and culture ministries to learn about relevant policies. The eighth Martial Arts Open School targeted underprivileged youth and women to promote physical and emotional development through martial arts. In 2024, the programme reached 781 participants across five countries, its highest participation level since its inception in 2017. Schools, cultural centers, and youth or sports organizations in each country collaborated to provide tailored training in martial arts and global citizenship education. In Malaysia, the Open School was held with Pertubuhan Seni Gayung Fatani Malaysia (PSGFM), and martial arts classes for youth will continue there. In Mauritius, a partnership with the country’s education authority led to the launch of free classes for low-income students at school facilities, and discussions are underway to incorporate martial arts into the physical education curriculum. In Zimbabwe, girls and young women aged 8-17 received self-defense training and drug abuse education, with the result being a positive psychological impact. In Vietnam, where youth show a strong interest in Korean culture, taekkyeon classes offered by the Korean Cultural Center in Hanoi have proven highly popular. And in Brazil, which has the longest Open School period of 12 weeks, parents of the participating children reported not only improved levels of basic physical fitness but also reduced time spent on smartphones. The 2024 World Martial Arts In-depth Research focused on seven traditional martial arts from the Central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. Some of these martial arts are inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The report detailed their origins, historical development, evolution, and practical applications. Since 2018, the ICM has conducted martial arts surveys in selected regions worldwide, and four of the reports previously only in English were translated into Korean to improve accessibility for readers in Korea. Such studies help identify the unique characteristics of each region’s fighting styles and lays the foundation for preserving and spreading them globally.
