Kolo or ki kolo is a newly created Latvian martial art using striking and throwing techniques as well as joint locks. The art uses the attackers power and motion to defeat him. Motion and dynamics of the movement play a big role. Techniques are mainly derived from kulachniy boy and korudo. Kolo also focusses on health and spirituality (International Kolo Organisation, n.d.). |
History/Development |
Kolo was created by Alexey Onopchenko, also referred to as ‘Kolo Swami’ (Great Teacher). In 1995 The International Kolo Organisation was founded.Next to martial arts the Kolo organisation is also involved in the preservation and popularization of Russian and Baltic cultural traditions, the preservation of historical monuments and the creation of related museums in the area (Oleg Cherne Official Website, n.d.). |

Some students who trained under founder Alexey Onopchenko opened their own schools to spread their knowledge of ki kolo. |
