05 ICM 2021 ANNUAL REPORT Forward 2021 04 ICM 2021 ANNUAL REPORT The 2021 ICM Annual Report about the details of the journey and progress made by ICM in 2021 as well as the valuable lessons learned over the course of the year has been published. Looking back, the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has been a global health crisis which has had a great impact on every aspect of human life - including on the economy, society and the environment. In particular, children and youth who will go on to be the next generation's leaders have had to forgo their socialization with their peers and switch their learning to online classes. This has hampered their physical development and increased social isolation. ICM has conducted diverse martial arts projects based around physical contact and human interaction. However, as the pandemic persisted longer than expected, the center was faced with multiple obstacles in achieving its goals. In the face of such unfortunate circumstances, ICM has made an allout effort to accomplish its given missions. In this way, it was able to make new achievements and continuously learn lessons in seeking new opportunities and finding new possibilities. ICM projects that had to be changed or canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus were conducted online in 2021 through effective digitalization. By integrating online and in-person methods and maximizing their unique advantages, ICM saw its overall project efficiency improve, including in the Martial Arts Research Initiative for Experts (MARIE), the ICM International Martial Arts Academic Seminar, the International Youth Online Martial Arts Camp (IYMAC) and the UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Demonstration Team. It is particularly noteworthy that the UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Demonstration Team has been leading the promotion of ICM and martial arts by developing unique online content on global martial arts. Despite the spread of the coronavirus, ICM has been perseverant in connecting developed and developing countries through martial arts and is helping to make a world where no one is left behind. It successfully held the 5th Martial Arts Open School (MAOS) and provided face-to-face martial arts education in accordance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines to young people and women living in five developing countries. Furthermore, by holding the 4th African Martial Arts Conference online, ICM improved awareness of African martial arts and forged global partnerships with countries across the African continent, which has been defined by UNESCO as a priority region in the implementation of its mandate. In its publications, ICM has employed a dual-track strategy where baseline and in-depth research are conducted in coordination so that the field of martial arts is more systematically explored. In 2021, the baseline research report World Martial Arts: Towards a Global Overview and the first edition of the in-depth research report Southeast Asian Martial Arts: A Unique and Complex Cultural Phenomenon were released. These lay a foundation for ICM to play a pivotal role in carrying out studies on martial arts. Despite COVID-19-induced adversities, by newly establishing an award system and awarding martial arts educators, ICM identified best practices that brought about positive changes in society through martial arts education and it took a central role in improving the public?s awareness of the educational values of martial arts. Furthermore, through the 2021 ICM International Martial Arts Photo Contest, ICM helped to rejuvenate the martial arts and art industries which had both been heavily impacted by the pandemic. Through exhibitions of the award-winning pictures, it demonstrated the diversity and spirit of martial arts to the wider public. Even amid the prolonged spread of the pandemic, ICM has continuously made contributions toward achieving sustainable development and spreading the educational and social values of martial arts. In this journey, the center made substantial progress. This was possible thanks to cooperation with domestic and international partners as well as the ICM family members who spared no effort in conducting projects with new methodology. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to everyone. I am certain that the lessons ICM learned through new experimentation in the implementation of projects in rapidly changing and unforeseeable circumstances will be a valuable asset for the growth of the center. With such an asset, ICM will continue to make efforts into pursuing innovation in project operation methods and expanding the scope of projects by closely working with various domestic and international organizations. I ask for your continued support and interest in growing ICM?s stature as not only a domestically but also a globally renowned martial arts institution. Thank you. Implementing a variety of projects during a tumultuous global landscape in 2021, ICM has learned valuable lessons through trial and error. Taking those lessons to heart, it will strive to become a globally renowned martial arts center. PARK Changhyun UNESCO ICM Secretary-General

14 ICM 2021 ANNUAL REPORT 15 ICM 2021 ANNUAL REPORT PART 2. ICM?s Footsteps in 2021 2021 MARIE improves the research capacity of global martial arts leaders and next-generation experts and promotes their networking. Last year, marked the fourth anniversary of MARIE and, due to the spread of the coronavirus, the initiative was implemented online. In accordance with the theme of the year ?Inclusive Martial Arts,? over a period of ten weeks participants attended lectures on theories and one-on-one thesis guidance sessions which were held by prestigious Korean professors. They successfully made thesis presentations face-to-face at the 2021 ICM International Martial Arts Academic Seminar and, ultimately, their individual capacity as scholars improved. ICM conducts studies that delve into the intrinsic values of martial arts with global martial arts leaders, experts and scholars, and it implements a wide range of projects to spread these values. Through the Martial Arts Research Initiative for Experts (MARIE), ICM offers global martial arts leaders opportunities to explore the values and social roles of martial arts. It leads the global agenda on martial arts by providing domestic and international experts a platform that encourages discussion and debate on issues relevant to martial arts. 16 ICM 2021 ANNUAL REPORT 17 ICM 2021 ANNUAL REPORT PART 2. ICM?s Footsteps in 2021 2021 2021 ICM International Martial Arts Academic Seminar 2021 UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Demonstration Team Theme Exploring the Social Value of Martial Arts ? Mutual Respect and Nonviolence Date November 16, 2021 Location UNESCO ICM International Conference Room The ICM International Martial Arts Academic Seminar is a discussion forum on the role of martial arts in addressing major global challenges including achieving sustainable development and establishing global peace. This year?s seminar was conducted in a hybrid format (utilizing both online and face-to-face aspects) with a theme of ?Exploring the Social Value of Martial Arts ? Mutual Respect and Nonviolence.? Throughout the event, interesting topics including stereotypes about martial arts were discussed by experts representing a wide range of disciplines. Ultimately, the seminar provided an opportunity to improve the public perception of martial arts. The UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Demonstration Team was established in 2019 to contribute to spreading the values of martial arts and promoting martial arts to the public. Despite the adverse circumstances of the pandemic, the team engaged in various activities including regular performances, performance tours and special performances. Additionally, it created unique online content, provided online martial arts trial sessions and produced martial arts education videos. This enabled the team to help the public to overcome temporal and spatial limitations and to encourage physical activity that has otherwise decreased due to COVID-19. Capacity Building through Martial Arts Martial arts training itself can be an ultimate objective and at the same time, a method to introduce multiple positive changes. With a strong belief in the power of martial arts, ICM has been supporting child, youth and women empowerment through martial arts. In particular in 2021, by holding the 2021 ICM International Martial Arts Photo Contest: Martial Arts, Embracing Daily Life, the center spread the positive and dynamic spirit of martial arts across the international community that has been grappling with the difficulties of the pandemic. Although it was unfortunate that participants could not interact faceto-face, ICM by providing a wide range of activities spared no effort in accomplishing the purposes of IYMAC - supporting the physical and emotional development of the youth, youth empowerment and promoting international exchange. The 2021 IYMAC successfully overcame the limitations of online events as participants were able to build bonds with each other by engaging with their college student mentors and taking part in group activities. This online camp promoted international student exchange and increased physical activity for the young participants, both of which had previously reduced since the spread of the coronavirus. In the ICM lobby, 36 prize-winning works were displayed for six months. For those who were unable to visit ICM due to travel limitations and the risk of exposure to the virus, the exhibition was also held online. The contest and exhibition served an important role in promoting the value of martial arts by spreading the dynamic and positive spirit across the world. Clearing House on Martial Arts Martial arts are not merely physical activities but a cultural heritage that contain within themselves the unique traditions and philosophies of their states or regions of origin. ICM has been making an all-out effort to protect and promote martial arts by categorizing them by country, region and type, and conducting research on their unique history and the transmission mechanisms by which they are preserved. ICM has employed a dual-track strategy where basic and advanced research are conducted together, this allows it to explore the field of martial arts more systematically. Baseline research enables researchers to identify the overall trends of martial arts and lays a foundation for all martial arts research while in-depth research helps deepen the understanding of martial arts practiced by regions or countries. The center plays a pivotal role in delivering information and knowledge on global martial arts by releasing periodic publications, such as ICM News and ICM Insight, where news about the organization, articles on martial arts and updates on partner organizations can be found. In 2021, ICM published the baseline research reportWorld Martial Arts: Towards a Global Overview, the first outcome of the project was to grasp the current state of global martial arts. The report introduces discourse on martial arts with themes, for example ?martial arts and music? and ?gender in martial arts?. It also provides in-depth knowledge of political, social, historical and cultural contexts underlying the development of martial arts around the world. The baseline report includes overview, origin, developmental history, transmission and popularization data of martial arts. The content is categorized by continent for publication in the form of an encyclopedia.
