UNESCO ICM Holds the 2022 Model UNESCO Conference

- 50 college students from 10 countries will have active discussions on ‘Youth Contribution to Peace Building -

The 2022 Model UNESCO Conference will be held by UNESCO ICM from August 2nd to 4th at the ICM’s International Conference Hall. At this event, more than 50 university students from 10 countries will participate.

 

Under the topic of ‘Youth Contribution to Peace Building through Martial Arts and Related Physical Activities,’ a discussion debate will take place in the style of the UNESCO General Conference and CIGEPS*. Participants will be encouraged to join the discussion actively as delegates of 18 member states** of CIGEPS.


* The Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) is a multilateral consultative body in physical education and sport. It is also an international platform that facilitates communication and cooperation in physical education and sport. CIGEPS is responsible for coordinating the Ministerial Conference for Sport and Physical Education and the International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education (MINEPS). One of its main roles is to develop agendas for the international conferences.

** CIGEPS is composed of 18 member states of UNESCO elected by the General Conference. Three countries from each region acquire membership within the committee. The committee holds a biennial meeting in accordance with the rules of the UNESCO General Conference and Executive Board. 

This conference, which marks the first anniversary, is expected to provide solutions laid out from the youth’s perspectives and contribute to empowering young people by establishing global agendas.

 

Introductory remarks and encouragement for participants will be delivered online by former UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon; Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports and Chairman of CIGEPS, Farid Gayibov; and President of International Sport Strategy Foundation, Ryu Seung-min

 

ICM Secretary General Park Changhyun said, “Globally, there is a growing interest in peace. With this in mind, the conference will serve as a platform where participants discover creative ways to contribute to global peace through martial arts. Moreover, participants will have a glimpse into international conferences by writing resolutions and engaging in English-language debates that follow standard rules of international conferences.”

 

ICM will continue to hold the Model UNESCO Conference with a wide range of topics in order to support physical activities including martial arts in their becoming a means to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
