General Information |
Jang sanati is an ancient martial art that originated thousands of years ago in Uzbekistan. According to the International Jang San’ati Association (IJSA) it contains the essence of traditions and philosophy of the Uzbek people, as well as humanism, courage and respect for the opponent. The values of jang sanati are said to be modesty, decency, patience, self-possession and strength of mind. The art consists of a combination of kicking, punching and wrestling techniques. Practitioners learn how to handle swords, daggers and sticks. There are 25 sets of choreographed exercises, their main function is to pass down the style’s techniques in an organised manner serving as a method of physical conditioning. They are also useful for public demonstrations. The sets can be practiced alone, or with one or more partners. The techniques and tactics of jang sanati aim for a big impact with little effort. The exercises are harmonious. Attack and defence often take place simultaneously, differentiating jang sanati from the martial arts in which a block is followed by a strike (International Jang San’ati Association, s.d.). |
History/Development |
Archaeological findings and scientific studies provide evidence for the existence of single combats in Uzbekistan about 3.5-4 thousand years ago. On the territory of modern Surkhandarya pottery depicting two wrestling men, one of them executing a sweep throw, was found. This finding dates from the Bactrian period which proves that more than 3.5 thousand years ago single combats were already prevalent. Greek historian Elian Claudius mentions its popularity among the Saka tribes which inhabited the territory of modern Uzbekistan. In December 2009 jang sanati became a national sport in Uzbekistan (International Jang San’ati Association, s.d.). |
