General Information Cornish wrestling is a national sport of the Cornwall region and is claimed to be passed down for over 3,000 years through generations (The Cornish Wrestling Association, s.d.). Cornish wrestling is a stand-up style wrestling without grappling and holding on the ground. To win, the wrestlers should throw and make an opponent’s shoulders and hips touch the ground; three of the four parts have to touch the ground simultaneously (Tripp 2009: 3).
There used to be different rules in the towns and villages in Cornwall. Cornish Wrestling Association, the governing body of the wrestling founded in 1923, formulated the common rules for all regions.
Cornish wrestling is most unique in that the wrestlers wear a short, loose jacket around the wrist, which all grips have to be placed on. The match takes places on the grass and there are several weight and age groups.
